TRE®
Tension/Trauma Release Exercises

What is TRE®
First...this practice is not as intimidating and/or aggressive as the name may lead you to think!! TRE® is a safe and gentle practice that includes a series of easily accessible exercises, for any body or age, that gently fatigue your lower body, allowing your nervous system to start the inborn tremoring mechanism natural to our bodies to help release the stress, tension and/or trauma that is being held. This practice is a completely self-regulatory, meaning that it's about connecting to and listening to your body, going at your pace, and taking breaks if needed. All exercises are modifiable. This practice is not about "pushing through" like most are encouraged to do. Our bodies and nervous systems heal best with slow and gentle...less is more.
How do we get dysregulated??

Our bodies naturally brace for danger-real or perceived. It can be that big brace, pulling into the fetal position or so subtle you may not even notice. During that time, our body also releases adrenaline and cortisol...the stress hormones. When the "danger" has passed, the body will complete the stress cycle. It does that by relaxing and releasing the tension. Also, it will usually go into slight shaking/tremors-otherwise known as the adrenaline dump. It is burning off the unused stress hormones that were released. Here's where we can start to get dysregulated. The body needs to complete that stress cycle because we are not meant to be in that activation for long periods, only until the danger passes or we get away. So what causes the stress cycle to not complete? It can be multiple factors...you are in an environment where you can't let that happen (military, fire, ems, ER, high stress jobs or unsafe places), you have never had the adrenaline dump before and are not sure what your body is doing so it freaks you out and you stop it...or the most common, there are other people around and not everyone is reacted the same way you are so now you don't want them to think there is something wrong with you, you are sick, weak, etc so you stop it.

So, what happens then? Repeated exposure to stressors and/or trauma (could be one big event or an accumulation of many smaller events) builds up in our body. We hold that tension, that brace, those stress hormones and it just builds . The more it builds, it becomes a little harder to get back to our original baseline. So when we don't release it, our body and nervous system can shift into a chronic state of fight/flight, freeze/collapse or sometimes it goes between both. This dysregulation of our nervous system can create issues with sleep, anxiety, depression, difficulty regulating our emotions, difficulty concentrating, executive dysfunctioning, feeling like you can't fully relax, PTSD. It also can lead to chronic pain, tension patterns held in the body, digestive issues and list goes on.
